History and Conservation_ 2 day Workshop

Sushant School of Art and Architecture (SSAA), Ansal University hosted and organised a two-day workshop on ’History and Conservation: Voices from Small and Medium Towns of India’ on Dec. 6-7, 2017. The two-day workshop was a part of the collaboration between SSAA, CEPT University, Ahmedabad and NSC for Historic Towns and Villages, ICOMOS India. The workshop served as a platform for sharing insights from various regions in the specific context of small and medium towns of India.
On day one, the faculty and students of SSAA shared their work on Rakhigarhi; Sadar Bazaar, Gurgaon; Baoli at Badshahpur, Gurgaon and built heritage of small and medium towns of the District Gurgaon. This was followed by a site visit to Shiv Kund, Sohna through which the participants were introduced to the layered realities of a religious heritage site maintained and managed by the local community. Aspects of religion, history and politics were realised by the participants through the visit to the sacred hot sulphur spring that has been proven to have medicinal properties.
Dr Jigna Desai and Dr Gauri Bharat from CEPT University presented the outcome of a study of the status of HRIDAY cities and main takeaways from the two day symposium ‘History and Conservation, as if people matter’ held in August at CEPT University, as a part of the collaboration. The idea notes submitted and presented by practitioners and academics on day two represented issues and opportunities with respect to history and conservation in small and medium towns from various geographical regions of the country. The 65 participants included masters students from various architecture schools in the country, academics, conservation architects, historians, planners and developers, creating a valuable discourse on the uniqueness of these towns, the approach of the local community and the challenges that the heritage faces.
The event included an exhibition of the institutional initiatives of the School, faculty projects, faculty research and student work related to history, heritage and conservation.
