Planning, Architecture and Design are three disciplines that contribute to every aspect of the built environment we inhabit. In practice, their domains are so intertwined with each other that it is difficult to trace out where one ends and the other begins. Yet, in mainstream education, they sit separate from each other commanding their individual silos quite oblivious of each other’s existence. This position rightly being challenged by the co-existence of the the three disciplines in the Sushant Schools of Planning and Development, of Art and Architiecture and of Design. The three Schools share between them pedagogic modules and resources that are shared and developed by the three disciplines together. This is a unique and innovative moment offered in the field of creative disciplines at Ansal University
Pursuing a career in architecture is rife with perks, as it is a diverse realm offering a wide range of potential roles. Top colleges in Gurgaon offering architecture courses aim to develop prospective students in multifarious aspects, including the faculties of perception and responsible decision-making, which play a vital role in the field. Here are some potential career paths a degree in architecture can offer:
- Technical Architect
Most architects lean towards one kind or the other as their careers evolve – technical or design. Design architects typically start their projects from the Schematic Design Phase through Design Development. From this point on, a technical architect takes it through Construction Documents and Construction Administration. This kind of role demands the individual to draw how a certain building is going to be put together, rather than defining the aesthetic look of the project. For instance, technical architects would be more occupied with resolving a drainage issue on a flat roof and detailing the drawings accordingly.
- Design Architect
Architects are generally accepted in varying levels: a Junior Designer typically warrants 3-5 years of experience, an Intermediate Designer and a Senior Designer warrants 6-9 and 10+ years of experience respectively. When an individual has less than 3 years of experience in the architectural realm, they are generally considered for an internship, while being urged to enrol in the Intern Development Program (IDP). The role of a design architect demands identifying the project site, photos, surveys, and existing conditions. Leveraging on this information, he/she develops plans to fit the given program – starting with simple drawing, which gradually evolve into 2D and 3D software-enabled blueprints.
- BIM Manager
A Building Information Modelling (BIM) Manager works on larger projects, wherein he/she is in charge of the model and the updates that occur. This is more of a technical position, as the individual acts as a consultant management and there is little to no design aspect involved. The BIM Manager’s primary role is to coordinate multiple models with consultants – the BIM model needs to be linked with the architectural model, which makes the role crucial in terms of effective project delivery.
- Specifications Writer
Specs writers are responsible for creating written documents that contain the descriptions of different kinds of material for builders, and how they ought to be used during a project. This job entails making sure that the components of a building fit together and work effectively. This role is absolutely necessary for large construction projects, which generally include specification documents spanning over 1000+ pages.
- Project Manager

He/she is also responsible for organizing, planning, and staffing the project, while monitoring the progress and execution of the same.
- Interior Designer
An individual interior designer or a full-fledged team might be assigned, depending on the scope of a project. For instance, a single family residence might require the architect to carry out the interior design – however, this becomes difficult in the case of a large commercial project, which would require a team of interior designers to take up the task. Interior designers hold the responsibility to research and analyze the clients goals/requirements, while formulating the preliminary space plans and the initial 2D/3D sketches. Then on, he/she moves on to the preparation of construction documents and takes care of the finer elements, such as lighting designs, finishing, and furniture layouts.
